Edith Stein was born October 12, 1891 in the then German town of Breslau, now the Polish city of Wroclaw, is the last of ten children of an Orthodox Jewish family.
In 1904 Edith became an atheist, he studied German, philosophy, psychology and history at the University, he studied with Husserl that follows as an assistant at the University of Freiburg and takes with him a doctorate in philosophy.
Jewish atheist then, approaches alla religione cattolica nel 1921, dopo aver letto l'autobiografia di santa Teresa d'Avila, l'anno successivo si converte e si fa battezzare, lascia il suo posto all'università e va ad insegnare in una scuola femminile domenicana ma le leggi razziali del governo le creano diversi problemi.

Per fuggire ai nazisti viene trasferita al convento Carmelitano di Echt nei Paesi Bassi ma nel 1942 Hitler ordina l'arresto dei convertiti ebraici e sia Edith che sua sorella vengono catturate e internate in un campo di transito prima di essere trasportate nel campo di concentramento Auschwitz, where they will be killed in the gas chamber 9 August 1942.
On 1 May 1987 in Cologne Cathedral, Pope John Paul II beatified, canonized in 1998 and appointed patron of Europe.
Edith Stein Prize is awarded every two years to individuals or organizations who have distinguished themselves worldwide for their commitment to social, political or civil, the prize includes a medal with the inscription "Unsere Menschenliebe ist das Maß unserer Gottesliebe ( Our love for man is the measure of our love for God).
